The Department of Modern History and Migration Studies at Osnabrück University (NGHM) is closely cooperating with many colleagues and institutions around the world. Apart from our active research in an international setting, this allows us to develop ideas to further internationalize our studying program of history. In this vein, we are excited to continue our exchange with different departments at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana, USA. The University of Notre Dame is a highly prestigious university particularly in the humanities and social sciences.
This November professor A. James McAdams, former director of the Nanovic Institute of European Studies at Notre Dame, is conducting research in the field of far-right studies in Germany. This line of research stands in close cooperation with PD Dr. Frank Wolff from NGHM and is connected to their current research group “The Language of Liberalism and the Far Right”, hosted by the Nanovic Institute for European Studies at the University of Notre Dame.
As a part of his stay in Germany, this Thursday (Nov. 10, 2022) professor McAdams will present his newest book Contemporary Far-right Thinkers and the Future of Liberal Democracy (Routledge 2022) to our students. In a special joint session, he will join the courses “Von der ‘Konservativen Revolution’ zur ‘Neuen Rechten’: An Intellectual History of Far-Right-Radicalism in Germany” (Dr. Sebastian Musch) and “Wider Weimar: Völkisches Denken in der Weimarer Republik” (PD Dr. Frank Wolff). Together, we will discuss professor McAdams’ new work and offer our students the opportunity to discuss his latest research and to develop a deeper exchange with one of the leading specialists in the field of studying far-right movements and institutions in Germany’s past and present. This special seminar session will give our students insight into current research and allow them to connect their own ideas and interests with an internationally renowned scholar. We are grateful for professor McAdams’ expressed interest in discussing his work with the history students at Osnabrück University.
In this exciting session we will strengthen the connection of our studying program to other international researchers and institutions. In return, in December 2022 PD Dr. Frank Wolff will travel to Notre Dame and continue the exchange on this side as well.
